What is Technical SEO: Definition?
Under the term Technical SEO, various processes come together to lay the groundwork for successful SEO work. Usually, the process starts with a site audit, through which a variety of data is collected from all your website pages.
Technical SEO describes the evaluations that are concluded from this data. Below, we have summarized a checklist that further elaborates on each step.
One thing that all of these steps have in common, is that they increase the probability of better search engine rankings for your content.

Why is Technical SEO Necessary?
You and your team have probably already spent many hours building a professional website. You have created new pages, written and revised texts, and removed old content.
Nevertheless, the number of visitors to your website leaves much to be desired. In many cases, the reason for this is that your content is not indexed properly. Google has difficulty understanding how your site is built and consequently, it reduces your visibility.
Our Technical SEO makes sure that all requirements for professional SEO work are met!

Technical SEO: Checklist
Now, here are 7 important steps that every Technical SEO should include. Each one of them will have a positive impact on the visibility of your website.
1. Site Audit
Good decisions are made based on data. Before we act, we collect as much data from your website as possible. Based on this, we create action points which we share with you.
For the analysis, we use the professional SEO software Ahrefs. The data we extract is collected, filtered and organized in a specially formatted Excel sheet.
2. Set Up Sitemap
First, we need to make sure that your pages are indexed correctly. Therefore, we check sitemaps & robots.txt and adjust them as necessary.
To save on your budget and to show Google the top-quality pages of your website, as few pages as possible should be indexed. Only pages that generate traffic via Google should be indexed!
3. Set Up Robot.txt
Pages that shouldn’t be indexed are provided with a robot.txt file. This content will still be visible on your site, but it will no longer be recognized by Google.
This way, we can ensure Google focuses on the content that has the greatest potential to attract visitors through search engine results.
4. Revise SEO Title and Meta Descriptions
Many put great work into their texts, but forget about the meta title and meta description.
The meta title and description will be the first impression you give to both Google and search engine users. Therefore, it is important to process your focus keyword here and to meet the search intent. In addition, clever wording can also increase the conversion rate.
5. Improve Alt-texts
Every good website nowadays uses images and graphics to enhance the user experience.
Graphics give your users visuals and can break up long passages of text. But they are also an important factor when it comes to SEO ranking. During our Technical SEO, we determine if your images have alt text. These are what Google uses to recognize what’s on your images. By using keywords and clear captions in the alt texts, you will improve the search engine optimization of your content.
6. Link Check
With the help of modern software, we record if all links placed on your website are correct.
Old links may no longer exist or the URL of the linked page may have changed. To avoid error messages and bad user experiences, we make sure that no link leads to nowhere.
7. Customize URL
In the best case, the URL of a page is always kept as short as possible and contains only the focus keyword.
Under certain circumstances, it can make sense to adjust the URL afterwards. Otherwise, there is always the possibility of creating a redirect to a new URL. If you want to know more about redirects and removing outdated content, we have developed a separate blog post.

Technical SEO Tools: What Software Do We Work With?
When collecting and analyzing data, we use professional SEO software. The following tools are used in our Technical SEO and Site Audit processes:
What is Duplicate Content?
When you create content for different pages on your website, repeating yourself at some point is bound to happen.
If two pages with almost identical content are indexed, Google may consider this content as duplicate content and consequently penalize it with poor search engine results.
To avoid duplicate content, you can either ensure uniqueness when writing the texts or provide duplicate content with a robot.txt file and therefore inform Google that this page should not be indexed.
